Overall Objective: Create a modern and colorful open space while giving a nod to the building's historic mid-century architecture.
Renovation of this mid-century modern landmark has brought this iconic 146,000 SF building into the 21st Century while artfully addressing the concerns of the preservation community. The Headquarters building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010 as an excellent example of Modern International Style.
"Attracting and retaining the best employees is crucial to our continued success, and these much-needed updates help us do that while still maintaining the historic character of the original building,” said Arlen Orchard, SMUD CEO and General Manager. The building is filled with 40 open spaces, small nooks and conference rooms with chairs and tables, creating an environment for impromptu meetings and casual collaboration .
