MTA Founder Miles Treaster

Our Story

Explore MTA's tradition of excellence in providing the best modern design and highest quality services spanning six decades.

MTA has served Northern California for the last six decades with the highest quality customer service and competitive pricing on the best modern design furnishings. Although our business has evolved over the years, MTA’s commitment to modern design and the highest quality service remains unchanged.

Founded in 1958 as Treaster and Green, our company initially offered both residential and commercial design services as a family-run business. In 1964, Miles Treaster purchased the business after his father Miles Sr. passed away. A recent graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in design, Miles Jr. brought a renewed interest in modernism to his leadership, leading him to partner with Herman Miller as Sacramento’s exclusive dealer.

Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Miles established his work and our organization as one of Sacramento’s leading firms. His outgoing nature and passion for design made him the frequent subject of stories in local media, establishing him as an expert in modern design. In the 1980s, he wrote a regular column in The Sacramento Bee on the future of design and commercial real estate.

In 1992, Miles promoted Therese Kingsbury and Nona Gunnell as Vice-Presidents to run the company, making MTA one of Sacramento’s first commercial furniture design companies to be led by women. In 2006, an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) was developed as a productivity incentive. In making MTA an employee-owned organization, the decision united our employees to support the common goal of achieving success and fostered a unique culture that values equality, equity, and diversity.
