Designing spaces for Auburn to gather, learn, and grow
The Placer County Library renovation reimagines Auburn's library as a nature-inspired, community-centered destination that supports learning, discovery, and connection. Designed by HGA, the project brings the outdoors in through natural materials, daylighting, organic forms, and strong visual connections to the surrounding landscape.
Working within an existing building, the team created a calming, welcoming environment that encourages reading, collaboration, community gathering, and informal learning while reflecting Auburn's unique identity and natural setting.
A key challenge was navigating existing building conditions, including discrepancies in electrical infrastructure and wall layouts, while maintaining the design vision and staying within budget. Through close collaboration and strategic value engineering, practical solutions were developed without sacrificing functionality or aesthetics.
One of the project's greatest successes was delivering the project under budget while achieving the look, feel, and experience the client envisioned. The result is a warm, inviting public space that serves as a lasting resource for the Auburn community.
