The Unveiling of Ray Eames' Totem
As advocates for the power of design, MTA was proud to celebrate the unveiling of Totem, honoring Sacramento native Ray Eames and her creative legacy.
Celebrating a Sacramento Design Legacy: The Unveiling of Ray Eames' Totem
On October 2, MTA had the opportunity to attend and sponsor the unveiling of a remarkable public art installation celebrating one of Sacramento's most influential creative minds, Ray Eames. Hosted by the Capitol Area Development Authority (CADA), the event marked the debut of a semi-permanent installation featuring Eames' iconic Totem design at 900 O Street, serving as the first phase of CADA's Envision O Street initiative.
The installation transforms the exterior of a parking structure through large-scale vinyl-wrapped aluminum panel murals inspired by Totem, designed by Ray and Charles Eames, bringing vibrant color, geometry, and artistic energy to Sacramento's urban landscape. The unveiling welcomed community members, design enthusiasts, and civic leaders, including Eames Demetrios, grandson of Ray Eames, as well as representatives from local cultural institutions and city leadership.
A Sacramento Native with Global Influence
Born and raised in Sacramento in 1912, Ray Eames spent her formative years immersed in the city’s creative life. Her father managed the Vaudeville Empress Theater (now the Crest Theatre), introducing her at an early age to performance, visual storytelling, and the arts. At Sacramento High School, she participated in the Art Association and helped decorate school dances, early signs of the eye for color, composition. After attending Sacramento Junior College, she left Sacramento to continue her education in New York, the city remained the starting point of a creative life that would influence modern design around the world.
For those of us in the commercial interiors industry, the connection feels especially meaningful. The Eames work became synonymous with Herman Miller, the pioneering furniture manufacturer that brought many of their most iconic designs to market. Together, they redefined what modern furniture could be, creating pieces that continue to influence workplaces, homes, and public spaces around the world.
The Significance of Totem
While many know the Eames for their furniture, Totem highlights another side of Ray's creative genius. The artwork reflects her lifelong fascination with color, pattern, abstraction, and playful composition.
